Our Story
Heartwarming Living Solutions was founded by Evie Valportodesa, a woman whose deep-rooted calling to serve others began at an early age.
Evie’s journey of service started when she was just 8 years old, volunteering at St. Jerome Catholic Church in her hometown of Houston, TX. She spent her childhood working at various homeless shelters throughout the city, and from a young age, she felt a strong pull to help those struggling with homelessness and poverty.
As a middle school student, Evie discovered a passion for working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She felt a special connection to this population, having personally faced challenges with multiple learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Despite these obstacles, Evie never allowed her own struggles to hinder her mission to serve others.
In high school, she took her dedication further by volunteering with a club called SPARK, where she mentored students with disabilities and special needs. Evie dreamed of one day opening an orphanage for children with special needs and a shelter for those experiencing homelessness.
At the age of 19, Evie began turning her dream into reality by starting her first shelter in her grandmother’s house. She opened her doors to several young adults who were facing homelessness, determined to make a difference in their lives.
However, at 20, Evie faced her own personal health crisis. She suffered from severe postpartum depression and generalized anxiety disorder, battles that took years to overcome. During this difficult period, she realized how underserved her community was in terms of mental health resources and affordable housing. Motivated by these challenges, she made it her mission to address these gaps and help others in need.
At 26, Evie opened her first home for individuals with IDD. But just one year later, at 27, she faced a life-altering setback: she suffered a stroke following a reaction to the COVID vaccine. This left her partially paralyzed on her right side, requiring full assistance with personal care. For the next six months, Evie struggled with profound physical limitations and emotional challenges. She was unable to work, had no health insurance, and faced a broken healthcare system that failed to provide timely support.
During her time in the hospital, Evie witnessed firsthand the devastating reality of how many seniors and disabled individuals, without family support, were discharged to homeless shelters. This deeply saddened her and only strengthened her resolve to continue her mission.
Evie spent months praying for strength, and one day, she made a deal with God: if He allowed her to walk and recover, she would dedicate her life to serving others with the same love and compassion that Jesus demonstrated. The very next day, she began to regain strength in her right hand and foot. Within six weeks, she was using a walker and making significant progress in physical therapy.
Today, despite the many obstacles she has faced, Evie remains steadfast in her mission. She is committed to providing housing, support, and care for vulnerable populations—especially those experiencing homelessness and those living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her personal journey of resilience and faith continues to inspire her work at Heartwarming Living Solutions, where she strives to create a brighter future for those in need.
